Our Top 10 First Impressions of Colombia

Share

After spending the first few nights in Colombia, here are our first impressions of this amazing country!

1) Colombian people are among some of the friendliest we have met

2) Colombians are often reluctant to speak English, so be prepared with a basic knowledge of Spanish or a translator app.

3) Uber is safer and more affordable than taxis, despite being technically illegal.

4) Public places are pet friendly (restaurants, malls, etc). It was great to see how many furry friends were permitted on patios or in restaurants.

5) Wifi is everywhere and easy to find. Many public spaces, malls and restaurants have free wifi, so catching an uber or checking a map is easy to do without needing a sim card.

6) Colombia is safe! We walked for hours every day and never felt unsafe. Obviously, there are areas of any city that should be avoided at night and one should always be aware of their belongings at all times.

7) Colombia is progressive, clean and more advanced than we had anticipated. After reading about the conflicts in Colombia’s past, the country has demonstrated an incredible resiliency and is an excellent place to visit.

8) Colombians like to put cheese in everything (no problem with that here!)

9) The fruit is huge, specifically avocados and papayas!

10) Ciclovía (the closing of many main streets on Sundays for cyclists, runners, rollerbladers or walkers) is an incredible concept to encourage fitness and health.
